What I’ve learned in August to rethink processes

Hi and welcome to the New Process Letter!

This is a really short and focused way to share with you my key learnings of the month and to inspire you to rethink processes.

So August, let’s do this. 🚀

How to rethink processes with your hands 🤚

Martin Hochreiter

and

Tobias Zucali

from
mkrz lab
use wires, ropes, tape, pieces of wood, paper and cardboard – as well as the space they work in – to think with their hands, to move from doing to thinking 🔨

These are my learnings from their maker methodology:

Enabling creative exploration: I think, it’s very powerful to use creative, playful approaches and short, intuitive exercises to spark new perspectives and unlock deep insights. And when people step out of their comfort zones in a safe, supportive environment, it’s amazing how it levels the playing field and opens up a world of new possibilities. 🤝
Body Prototyping: Using body prototyping to physically manifest beliefs and barriers provides a unique way to reflect on specific issues. I find this approach very fascinating, especially as it emphasizes starting from the inside and using the body as a tool for deeper self-expression. 🧑🏭
The power of a physical artifact: I’m a big fan of using process models to create a shared image, a shared understanding. But creating a physical artifact to express a process, to bring a process to life — I think that could be really cool!

New Process Learnings 🚀

As we delve deeper into the topic of how to get people excited about processes, it’s important to compare the learnings with the New Process approach. So, how can we use the Maker Methodology in the New Process Life Cycle — the process of process management:

Define Process Purpose: Spark creativity by using body-involved prototypes, gathering diverse perspectives, and encouraging critical thinking with open-ended prototypes.
Develop Process Strategy: Map out the process journey and visualize the current and desired states to create a clear action plan.
Design Process: Activate teams with hands-on workshops, build physical prototypes to bring processes to life, and immerse fully by walk-throughs.
Implement Process: Communicate clearly using language, symbols, and artifacts, and deepen understanding through role play and simulations.
Steer Process Execution: Reflect, adapt, and collaboratively redesign the process using visual materials and symbolic objects.
Improve Process Execution: Redesign, prototype, and test new solutions to drive ongoing improvements.

Yesterday we had a really cool and inspiring New Process Pro Live Session where — apart from the opportunity to ask specific questions — we explored some examples of working with the Maker Method. 🔨

So, what’s next?

Finally, I’m going to talk to

Leona H.

again: About the psychological aspect of how to get people excited and more involved in BPM. It’s so important to know what’s going on in people’s heads. Why do they think and act in different ways? In the next Deep Dive episode with Leona, we will get to the bottom of this with the help of people’s basic needs. 💡

Have a great day and thanks for reading!
